Bookmaking

April 14, 2002. I have been getting into the idea of handmade books for a while, especially after this great book art exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art. I got a few books about bookmaking, and was about ready to get started, when I saw that there was a Basic Book Arts class being offered at the Maine College of Art, so I just signed up for that. I just took it this weekend, and it was so great, and exactly what I needed. We made a bunch of sample books that represented many different binding techniques. I'm ready now to start making some of my own books! So excited. I'll update this page as I start making more books.

Here are some of the books I made in the class.

The first book we made was a single signature, or pamphlet, book. I scanned in my book, but it just looked like a giant rectangle, which isn't especially exciting, so I drew a bird's-eye view of what this book looks like. Although this is a very basic book style, it looks pretty neat with its nifty stitched spine.
The next book we did was a double signature book with a cover that wrapped around. Here's my bird's-eye view drawing of it. (By the way, "signature" refers to a group of pages, usually paper folded in half and grouped together. The single signature book only has one group of pages like this, and the double signature has two.)

This is my double signature book, with the cover tucked in like an envelope. I like this one, with its wraparound cover, because it makes a neat little packet.

The next book we did was an accordian book, which is called that because the inside pages are folded like an accordian. This book is nice because it can tell a long story, and it's also good for cutting things out to make pop-up shapes.

This is my accordian book. Not very exciting as a scanned in image, I know, but you can see the nice paper I got to use on the cover.

We also did an Asian-style binding, which I really loved. I think the string binding looks very cool, and very pretty.

This is my little sample card of other possible stitches for the Asian-bound book.
