Knitting Page Archives: May 2002

May 23, 2002. I finished all the knitting on the hooded baby towel yesterday, and it's blocking now. So that's good. It only took a week and a half. My next project, which I'll bring with me on our vacation, is this sweater from Vogue Knitting Spring/Summer '02:

next project Except that I'm going to make it in black.

Theresa has this fun new idea of asking questions of all the knitbloggers, so we (and you) can get to know who the person is behind the knitter. So here's my stab at answering her first set of questions. I might come back with revisions to these next week, after my mom reads them.

1. Where were you born? What do you know about your own birth? (time, circumstance, etc...)
I was born in New York City. The only birth-related stories I know are that my mom craved chili dogs while she was pregnant with me, and then her friend Joel brought her a chili dog after she gave birth, and it was about the last thing she wanted (interestingly, I've never ever had a chili dog). Then Joel's car got towed, and he used to pretend he was still mad at me about it.

2. Do you have a baby picture you can put onto your weblog? If not, tell us what you looked like as a baby.

I love this picture, mostly because I sort of feel like I still look exactly like this. I still stand the same way, with my hands balled into little fists. I still squint into the sun. I also love this picture because I figure I was an interesting kid if I stood on picnic tables with Sylvester slippers on.

I had to include this photo since this looks like a handknit sweater.

3. What kind of a baby or toddler were you according to the people who were around when you were young?
Hyper. I used to run around and around and around in circles, all day long. When I was about 3 years old, my aunt said, "She's a lulu" as I was running around and around, and the name stuck. My mom still calls me Lulu almost all the time. I hear I was a pretty happy, fun-loving baby (and toddler) (and grownup). There's also a story of me saying something funny at the age of 5 or so that cracked up a whole group of strangers at a dairy barn, and I like knowing I was a funny kid.

4. Know any cute baby-related quotes?
The only baby-related quote I know (of mine) (ok, it's not really a quote) is that, apparently, after "Mommy" and "Daddy" my first word was "bagel." Mom, is this true? My dad was quite a joker, so I'm wondering now if this is just something he told me to be funny. I do really love bagels though, so it could be true.

May 21, 2002. Yesterday in the grocery store line I was flipping through a copy of "Family Circle HomeCrafts" and I decided to get it, since there seemed to be some decent projects (despite the cheesy copy: "To transform a basic bedroom lamp into a boudoir beauty..." etc.). It wasn't until I got home that I saw this:

tiki-riffic!

A knitted floor lamp. With matching pillow. It's knit in some microfiber/nylon yarn. They claim this is blue and white, but it sure looks like black and white to me. I really want to make this, but it wouldn't go at all in our house, or with our stuff. Someday I'll have some spare room where I can knit a giant pink and black floor lamp (I couldn't make mine white because I'd spill coffee on it).

May 19, 2002. I went to the Maine Fabric and Fiber Arts Festival yesterday; you can read about it here. I've done 17 inches on the hooded baby towel, so I'm moving right along there, and I think I should finish it over the next few days (I didn't update with any pictures of it, since it's just a giant square thing right now). Yesterday I bought a rubber ducky to go with it, so the recipients know what it is. I'm afraid otherwise they might think it's a slightly odd baby blanket.

May 15, 2002. I updated the hooded towel page, but it's not very exciting.

I really want one of these, but I'm afraid to call up and ask how much it costs. Since the woman said something in Vogue Knitting about how she wanted to model her needle case after her Prada wallet, I'm guessing these cost about $300.

May 14, 2002. I bought the new Vogue Knitting special men's issue today, and it seems pretty good (is it me, or is every Vogue Knitting issue a "special issue"?). I'm not sure Dave would wear any of the sweaters in there, but I might. Dave's not really a sweater-wearer anyway, which is probably good, since I'd have to make any sweater for him 12 inches longer than the pattern called for, and that would get tedious.

May 10, 2002. I finished the hooded baby sweater!

They cancelled the sampler sock making workshop I was going to take at the Maine Fabric and Fiber Festival. Bummed. Though it's probably for the best, since I want to forge ahead with my sweater-making, and socks might just confuse me at this point. I do want to make socks eventually, but I'll just wait until I'm ready for it, and get a book or something. I'm still psyched to go to the Festival though!

May 6, 2002. I've updated my progress on the hooded baby sweater.

May 1, 2002. I'm nearing the end of the hooded baby sweater, and am looking toward what my next project should be. Though I'm eager to actually knit a sweater for myself, I'm going to do a basic project next, so I can knit something quickly and make sure I'm not twisting my stitches. I'm going to do the hooded baby towel from Knitter's Magazine Summer 2001 (hey! I'm becoming quite the hooded baby item expert). I couldn't find the Terryspun yarn anywhere around here, so I ordered it online (my first online yarn order!). I am actually knitting it in the color they used in the magazine, Seaspray, which seemed like a nice basic color. This will be for college friends of mine who had a boy about a month ago (so that's another advantage to this pattern: I can finish it quickly, since I'm already late with the gift, and I don't have to worry about spending a month on a baby sweater that the baby's already outgrown).
