June 9, 2002. My friends Ian and Ellen just bought a house, and I'm taking the train down to Boston and staying with them. I wanted to bring a housewarming giftie of some sort, but knew it had to be small, since I'd be schlepping it down on the train and then over to my info session at Simmons College before I got to their house. I finally decided to just make a card, and let that be gift enough for now. I played with some different pop-up card ideas, and finally decided to knit a little house and glue it to a card. This was really fun to do; I've never designed any knit thing myself, and I've never knit with color before. The hardest part was getting it to lie flat; the roof especially wanted to curl right up. I ironed it and then glued it to the card, and then smashed it all under a big pile of books for a few hours. That seemed to work. I'll definitely explore the knit card idea more in the future. I think it would be really cute to do for a baby card.
